Contractors Mechanical Wins 2007 ABC Construction Award for Work at Rave Motion Picture Theaters

The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recognized Contractors Mechanical at the annual ABC Construction Awards, winning top honors in the Plumbing category for work performed at the Rave Motion Picture Theaters project in downtown Kalamazoo. Contractors Mechanical received the award at the ABC West Michigan Chapter’s awards competition ceremony held at the Pinnacle Center in Greater Grand Rapids on October 25, 2007.

 “We are of course, honored to be recognized with this award,” say Mark Dobbins, President. “The project involved some interesting challenges that required ingenuity and innovative solutions during the construction phase. The entire project team, led by Mike Lozier and Mike Burns, deserve the recognition for this win.”

Contractors Mechanical’s Mike Lozier, Vice President/Project Manager and Mike Burns, Field Manager, oversaw construction of plumbing and piping systems at Rave Motion Picture Theaters.  Among the challenges—the theater’s high ceiling heights and getting aerial lifts into position for installation in some areas of the theatre. To get lifts past a straight, 3-1/2 foot drop in the floor, Contractors Mechanical used steel erectors to build custom ramps to transport aerial lifts over the drop. Once in place, ceiling heights reached up to 42’, making construction of overhead piping a challenge.

Also, constructing piping systems in the projection room with 32’ ceilings on the second floor presented another unique challenge. The second floor could not support the weight of an aerial lift higher than 19 feet. Using a 19-foot lift, Contractors Mechanical lowered pipes vertically through an opening in the roof to reach workers on the lift.
